About us and our therapists

Who will I be working with? English-language sessions are held with a therapist from our centre. When you enquire, we tell you who you would be working with and answer any questions about their training and approach before you decide whether to go ahead. You can read more about the centre on our about page.

Are your therapists psychologists? Our therapists are psychotherapists and counsellors. In Greece, "psychologist" is a licensed professional title, and we only use titles that accurately describe our team. Our guide to mental health services in Greece explains the difference between psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists and counsellors.

How do your therapists work? They take an integrative, evidence-informed approach, adapting established methods to each person and drawing on cognitive-behavioural techniques where those help. They also pay close attention to the relationship between you, because research has consistently linked the strength of that working alliance with better outcomes, online as well as face to face (Flückiger et al., 2018).

Who do you work with? Adults, couples and teenagers aged 12 and over. For teenagers, a parent or guardian contacts us first. See our services for details.

Do you prescribe medication? No. Our therapists do not prescribe. When someone also needs medication or a medical assessment, we work alongside doctors and psychiatrists with the client's agreement.

Online, by video

Online sessions

Do you offer sessions in person? English-language sessions take place online by video on Google Meet, so you can join from wherever you are.

Is online therapy effective? For many common difficulties, research suggests it can be as helpful as meeting in person. A 2023 meta-analysis of 20 randomised controlled trials found that treatment delivered by video was comparable with in-person treatment for depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress in effectiveness, satisfaction and drop-out (Shaker et al., 2023). It is not suitable for every situation, for example during an acute crisis, and your therapist will discuss this with you.

What do I need? A device with a camera and microphone, a reasonably stable internet connection, headphones if possible and a private space. Full details are on our page about how online therapy works.

What times are available? Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 21:00 Athens time. We always confirm times in your own time zone, which is especially helpful in the weeks when clocks change on different dates around the world.

Starting and continuing therapy

What happens in the first session? Your therapist asks about what brings you, your history and what you would like to change, and together you agree an initial plan. You do not need to prepare anything, and it is fine to feel nervous.

How often will we meet, and for how long? Usually weekly at first. Some people come for a handful of sessions around a specific issue, while others work for longer; you review the plan with your therapist as you go, and you are free to stop at any time. Nobody can promise a particular result or timescale, but regular sessions give the work the best chance.

Can I change therapist? If the fit does not feel right, please tell us. It is a reasonable request, and we will talk it through with you.
