Why the language matters

To speak without translating.

You may work, study and live comfortably in another language. But when you talk about what touches you, your first language often makes the difference.

Every nuance, as you mean it

Many people find that their earliest memories, family conflicts and strongest emotions are tied to the language in which they were lived, so talking about them in Greek can unlock something that feels muted in a second language.

A background you recognise

Family, expectations, the holidays, the “home” you left. You can talk about all of it without explaining from scratch what it means to you.

Or English, if that is easier

Those born or educated abroad often find English more precise and less loaded, and some move between the two. What matters is that you can speak freely and feel understood (Flückiger et al., 2018).

What you can work on

What life brings far from home.

It doesn’t need to be a crisis for you to want to talk about it. It is enough that it is on your mind.

Distance from family and the guilt or worry about ageing parents; family expectations about careers, marriage and children; feeling “too Greek” in one place and “not Greek enough” in the other; relationships across cultures and raising children between two languages.

Who you will work with

A steady relationship, however far away you are.

Art of Mind is a psychotherapy and counselling centre founded by Matina Ladikou in Patras in 2019. In Greek you work with Matina; in English, with a therapist from our team. Either way, we start from your own experience: what brought you here, what is hard right now and what you would like to change, with confidentiality and clear boundaries. Online sessions also mean you can keep the same therapist if you move again or spend summers in Greece.

Questions that can help you choose

Greek or English, from wherever you live.

In which language do you argue with your family, and in which do you talk to your closest friends? Which language do your thoughts arrive in? There are no wrong answers, and some people start in one language and later change.

  1. Choose the language.

Greek with Matina, or English with a therapist from our team. Unsure? Tell us in your enquiry and we will talk it through.

  2. Book or enquire.

Greek sessions are booked and paid online; for English, we reply within 24 hours with suggested times.

  3. Start with an assessment.

Your history, your needs and an initial plan, agreed together.

  4. Agree the next steps.

How often you meet is shaped around what you need and reviewed as you go, with no fixed number of sessions.

Time zones and country guides

Find the country where you live.

Frequently asked questions

Before you start from abroad.

Who do I work with if I want sessions in Greek?

Sessions in Greek are with Matina Ladikou, psychotherapist and founder of Art of Mind. You can book them directly on our booking site, which is in Greek.

And if I prefer English?

English-language sessions are with a therapist from our centre. Send us an enquiry and we will reply within 24 hours.

My Greek is good for family conversations but not for talking about feelings. Which should I choose?

Choose the language in which you can say what you mean with the least effort. Many second-generation Greeks prefer English for therapy; others find that some things only make sense in Greek. If you are unsure, tell us in your enquiry and we will talk it through.

Is therapy covered by insurance where I live?

Our sessions are self-pay and are not covered by the NHS, Medicare or US and Canadian insurance plans. We issue a receipt for every session, and some private policies may reimburse it; please check with your insurer.
