Life far from home

Support that travels with you

Others have moved across the Atlantic more recently, for a degree, a job or a relationship. Whichever describes you, there may be times when you want to talk to someone who understands the Greek side of your life without needing it explained. Art of Mind, a psychotherapy centre founded in Patras, Greece, in 2019, offers online sessions for Greeks in the USA and Canada, in Greek or in English.

Greek or English: your choice

In Greek, with Matina Ladikou. Sessions in Greek are with Matina Ladikou, psychotherapist and founder of Art of Mind. They are booked directly on our booking site, which is in Greek, where you choose an available date and time.

In English, with a therapist from our centre. Many people who grew up in North America in Greek families understand Greek well but find it easier to talk about emotions in English. English-language sessions are with a therapist from our centre and begin with a short enquiry, to which we reply within 24 hours.

What people bring to therapy

The themes vary, but some are especially common among Greeks in North America. Second- and third-generation clients often talk about family: close, loving and sometimes overwhelming, with strong expectations about education, marriage, work and staying near home, and a sense of obligation that can be hard to balance with a life of one's own. More recent arrivals tend to talk about distance, about building a social life in a country where people are friendly but busy and where cities are spread out, and about worrying from thousands of kilometres away when a parent in Greece falls ill.

Underneath these, the difficulties themselves are often familiar ones: anxiety and panic attacks, low mood, burnout from demanding jobs, grief, or tension in a relationship, which can be explored together in couples therapy.

For the people around you

Teenagers and parents

Greek families in North America sometimes contact us about a teenager rather than themselves, perhaps because a son or daughter is anxious, withdrawn or caught between the expectations of home and the pressures of school and friends. We offer teen counselling in English for young people aged 12 and over, arranged first with a parent or guardian, and parent counselling for parents who want help understanding what is going on and responding in a way that keeps communication open. Because of the time difference, after-school times are hard to arrange on the West Coast, so families in the Eastern and Central time zones usually find scheduling easier.

Time zones

Sessions are available Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 21:00 Athens time. For most of the year, that translates as follows:

RegionExample citiesDifference from AthensAthens 09:00–21:00 is
EasternNew York, Boston, Toronto, Montreal7 hours behind02:00–14:00
CentralChicago, Houston, Winnipeg8 hours behind01:00–13:00
PacificLos Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver10 hours behind23:00 (previous day)–11:00
AtlanticHalifax6 hours behind03:00–15:00

Because North America and Europe change their clocks on different dates, the gap shrinks by one hour for about three weeks in March and for about a week at the end of October and start of November. We always confirm each session in your local time. In practice, the East Coast and Central time zones work best for mornings and lunchtimes, while the West Coast suits people who are happy with an early-morning session before work.

How we start

How sessions work

Sessions take place on Google Meet, last 45 minutes and are usually weekly at first. In the first session, your therapist asks what brings you, about your history and what you would like to change, and together you agree an initial plan. A meta-analysis of 20 randomised controlled trials found that treatment delivered by video was comparable with in-person treatment for depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress in effectiveness, satisfaction and drop-out (Shaker et al., 2023), and research on the therapeutic relationship shows that a good working alliance matters just as much online as it does in person (Flückiger et al., 2018). More practical details are on our page about how online therapy works.

Insurance, titles and practical points

Our centre and our therapists are based in Greece, not in the USA or Canada, so our sessions are not part of any North American insurance network, and they are not covered by US or Canadian insurance plans. They are self-pay, and we issue a receipt for every session. Our therapists are psychotherapists and counsellors, and we do not describe them as psychologists, because that title means something specific and regulated in both Greece and North America.

Fees for English-language sessions are on our pricing page, and fees for sessions in Greek are on our Greek pricing page. Payments are made in euros.

Urgent help in the USA and Canada

Online therapy with a centre in Greece cannot respond to an emergency where you live. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911. In both countries you can also call or text 988: in the USA, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline offers free, confidential support by call, text or chat, 24/7 (988 Lifeline), and in Canada, 9-8-8 is the Suicide Crisis Helpline, available by call or text 24 hours a day, every day of the year (988.ca).

In an emergency call 112. In Greece you can also call 1018 (suicide prevention) or 10306 (mental-health support). For helplines in your country, see findahelpline.com.
